Uphold Democratic Principles in Election

PRESS STATEMENT

Ref. No.: 20240420 Election

Yesterday marked the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Manipur amidst enduring hardships since May 3, 2023. Despite these challenges, the turnout stood at a commendable 68.8%, reflecting the resilient spirit of the populace in upholding their right to vote and the principles of parliamentary democracy. However, this positive turnout was marred by distressing reports of disruptions, rigging, and violence in various polling booths.

Such incidents affront the very fabric of the Meitei Society and undermine the democratic values we hold dear. As of today, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a re-poll in eleven polling booths scheduled for April 22, 2024. We implore the ECI, all political parties, the electorates, and institutions to ensure a free and fair process in these precincts so that undemocratic incidents are not repeated.

The solemn purity of our democratic process serves as the cornerstone of our society, a legacy we must safeguard for the prosperity of future generations. Let us unite in our commitment to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure that every vote truly counts.
