Ref. No.: 20240102 Press

Press statement

Tuesday, 2nd January, 2024

1. Meitei Alliance is shocked by the killing of four men and injury of about ten others at Waithou Chingjao (under Lilong Police Station) in Manipur in the course of a reported skirmish between two groups in the late evening of Monday, 1st January 2024. Whoever are the parties involved in the unfortunate incident and whatever be the circumstances leading to it, Meitei Alliance doesn’t condone with the unlawful action or organised violence that was the cause of the deaths, injuries, and miseries.

2. Meitei Alliance deeply condoles with the families who have lost their loved ones, and prays for their strength to withstand forthcoming challenges and for the speedy recovery of the injured.

3. Meitei Alliance is also alarmed by the activities of those who either ignorantly or deliberately attempt to misrepresent the unfortunate incident as a communal clash. Statements by the leaders of leading organisations and individuals of both Meitei and Meitei Pangal communities have refuted such communal misrepresentation. In such a volatile situation, Meitei Alliance appreciates the urgent actions by the Government of Manipur and responsible mass organisations in controlling frenzied sentiments, unlawful assemblies or mob actions, misinformation, and hate campaigns.

4. Meitei Alliance stands with all the respectable organisations and individuals in Manipur in the collective endeavours towards maintaining law and order, communal harmony, and people’s unity.

Yours sincerely

Media Coordinator,

Meitei Alliance
